Figure Drawing and Painting

Oil Painting: Fundamentals and Historical Techniques

Instructor: Lauren Rosenblum

Oil Painting: Fundamentals and Historical Techniques

This class is open to all levels and ages; it is an ideal way for beginners to learn sound oil-painting basics, and intermediate and advanced students to sharpen their understanding of historical practices and techniques.

Beginning students will be introduced to basic oil-painting materials and methods and will focus on fundamental techniques starting with an underpainting known as grisaille.

Intermediate and advanced students will focus on historical painting methods— including Verdaccio, Venetian/Grisaille, and Flemish/Bister—used by the great masters.

The techniques will be taught sequentially, focusing on one per semester, so that students can gain a sufficient understanding of each painting method by completing a master-copy painting in that manner. The instructor will patiently guide each student with lectures, individual critiques, and demos.

Students are encouraged to move at their own individual
pace, and all levels of experience are welcome.

Materials:

•A small jar of gesso (for priming the board)
•Linseed stand oil / Liquin
•Gamsol
•Palette, jar, or cup for Gamsol
•Oil Paint colors:

Intermediate to Advanced Students working on Master copies—in addition to the above materials, please do the following:
•Choose a painting from the early Renaissance period (15th Century)
•Choose a size and bring a pre-cut masonite board that size.
•Bring in a photocopy print of the painting you are rendering on Photo paper (actual size): a black-and-white copy for tracing (regular copy paper). It is also helpful to print it out in monochromatic color (green, regular copy paper). This will help you stay focused on the values for the underpainting.
