Portrait painting with rob silverman

Alla Prima Portraiture Painting with Rob Silverman

Instructor: Rob Silverman

This class will concentrate on painting the portrait in a realistic manner using a direct painting approach. Students may work in any medium, such as watercolor, pastel, etc. Students will paint or draw the portrait from two long poses. The class includes demos, handouts, and personalized critique, tailored to the experience level of the student. The following concepts will be explored:

  • Blocking or massing in of the large forms and planes in a free, painterly manner that
captures the gesture of the sitter.
  • The effect of light on the form and how to choose an optimal lighting set-up to reveal
    the key ‘landmark’ features.
  • Compositional guidelines that take the mystery out of placing the head on the canvas.
  • Guidelines for establishing convincing flesh tones, and techniques to make values, edges, and contrast convey the illusion of depth and 3-dimensional form.
  • Unique techniques to help convey likeness.

The class includes demos, handouts and personalized critique, tailored to the experience level of the student.

Student Testimonials:

Thank you so much for teaching such a wonderful class in Wilton. I was thrilled to be a part of it. Please let me know if you ever do one again; immediately, I'll be there.
~ Joan C.

I enjoyed the portrait painting this past weekend. I especially found it useful learning how to use some new tools- such as the head measurements and view catcher. I printed reference pictures of the model and will continue to work on the painting.
~ Julie L.

I just wanted to take the time to say thank you so much for the packet! I really appreciate all of the materials and the note as well! … I'm going to dedicate some time to portrait work and I will be sure to send you some
photos of my drawings and paintings. Again, thank you so much!
~ Maria H.

Just wanted to say that was a great article in Workshop magazine, the reproductions of your work were very nice. We have a new section in the magazine that features a step-by-step demonstration written by an artist showing the progression of a work. If you're ever interested in writing one please let me know.
~ Student

Congrats-very nice article.
~ Christine Egnoski, Executive Director
Portrait Society of America

I read the article in workshop magazine and thought your measurement tool was the most logical way to get an accurate drawing of a face. You are a genius to have figured this out.
~ Pat M.
