CONSTRUCTING AN ÉCORCHÉ with David Klass
Sculptor and anatomist David Klass teaches students the anatomy and structure of the human figure by leading them through the construction of an écorché (anatomical figure). We begin by building the skeleton, using plasteline on a specially designed 24-inch armature. The muscles, tendons, and ligaments are then added region by region. This three-dimensional approach was developed by Mr. Klass as a method of understanding the complex relationships of the forms and structures of the body. Skeletons, medical texts, and a model are used for reference, along with Mr. Klass’s illustrated lectures. The materials fee includes the armature, 4 blocks of plasteline, and 2 clay tools.
