In this class students will replicate 1-2 masterpieces each semester done by artists from the 16th through the 20th centuries (such as Rembrandt, Rubens, Van Dyck, Ingres, Sir Thomas Lawrence, John Singer Sargent and more). With carefully guided research and instruction, students will copy the working methods of the artist as closely as possible. Through this practice, students gain a real understanding of various ways painting were completed and how to achieve certain effects related to composition, form, atmosphere, and color.
Instructor Manu Saluja has copied several Old Master works both independently and as a registered copyist at the Metropolitan Museum of Art with mentorship from John F. Murray.
Please note that you may need only drawing or only painting materials for this class, depending on your individual needs. Please check with your instructor before you purchase materials.
