LIAFA has Established itself as the premier classical art school on long island.

The Long Island Academy of Fine Art was the first school for classical art studies on Long Island, and since its founding has established itself as the premier academy on Long Island. The Academy serves the communities of Glen Cove, Oyster Bay and the North Shore area. At LIAFA we uphold the highest standards of classical academic drawing, painting, and sculpture. The Academy closely adheres to the strict program of study that director Robert Armetta experienced as a student at some of the best art schools both here in the U.S. and in Europe.

Praise for Our Instructors

“I have been a high-school art teacher for the past 19 years. In that time I have endeavored to improve my skills and to seek out a school or institution with instructors whose artistic philosophies came into confluence with my personal aesthetic sensibilities and point of view.

In addition to my Alma Mater, Queens College of the City University of New York, I have attended classes and workshops at the School of Visual Arts, Parsons School of Design, The Brooklyn Museum of Art School, The School of the Art Institute of Chicago, The New York Academy, The Boston Academy of Art, The Art Students League, Cooper Union, Mass Art at Bennington, The Stevenson Academy, The National Arts Club and finally the Art League of Long Island. Some of these classes and workshops were interesting and some a bit informative, while others were not. It was not until I took a class at the Long Island Academy of Fine Art with Robert Armetta that my personal aesthetic beliefs and goals have began to harmonize with my evolving abilities.

Robert Armetta is a superlative artist and teacher. He disseminates information, thoughts and ideas in a clear, concise and at times entertaining way. He works with each student individually as well as in groups, giving demos and imparting important resource information as he goes. I have learned more about important books and collections in the 2 summers that I have spent with Mr. Armetta than all of my years of study combined. Robert seems to have an encyclopedic knowledge of art and artists as he cites quotes, and the recorded thoughts and ideas of the great masters, often peppering the information with interesting and amusing anecdotes about one or another of the greats. He is a passionate and compassionate teacher who derives great joy from what he does as well as from the successes of his students.

Whether you are someone who is interested in studying contemporary realism in drawing, painting and sculpture based on the classical doctrine of the Great Masters, or a hobbyist who wants to hone his or her skills, The Long Island Academy of Fine Art will serve you well.”

“I have been fortunate to have received lessons from a gifted artist and extraordinary teacher for the past two quarters at Long Island Academy of Fine Arts. She is an accomplished professional artist who is known and respected in the art world as an article in the current International Artist attests. She has a very organic intuitive approach to portraiture and painting in general. Although she has definite standards – and they are high - of performance, she is flexible enough to allow individual expression. She is a very attentive and compassionate teacher, adjusting her teaching to individual abilities and level of experience. Artists of any ability or experience could and would benefit from her classes – this is an opportunity that should not be missed.”

“Many artists have to travel the world to receive a well rounded education. Lucky for me I found the Long Island Academy of Fine Art where I can receive the ultimate in art education without having to buy a ticket. When I first joined LIAFA, I started with one class and after experiencing what the school had to offer, I immediately signed up for more. LIAFA offers me classes on all levels, individualized programs, a supportive artist community, classes on topics such as composition and color along with cast and live model drawing, still life painting, plain air, visiting artists throughout the year, workshops given by accomplished artists worldwide and so much more. I have never had the experience of learning new things every single day in every single class. Nor have I ever experienced a teacher and mentor who cared and was dedicated enough to make sure that I was receiving the best education possible. What is most amazing to me is watching my work rapidly evolve into finer art then I could have ever hoped for while simultaneously developing a much deeper and richer understanding of my craft. LIAFA continues to push my art into deeper and more refined levels through a unique and customized program and the results are astounding. I dream of joining the ranks of the greats one day and i know with the help of LIAFA and hard work this dream will come true. I am fortunate as an artist to have LIAFA in my life and wish for all artists the same fortune."

Rob Silverman has devised a brilliantly simple way for artists to double-check the accuracy of their work. It's entirely visual and intuitive, doesn't break the flow of the process, and leaves plenty of room for spontaneity, first-hand observation, and individuality. This is exactly what I've been looking for, and nobody else is teaching it."

Youth Programs

"I am very happy that I found a place so close to where I live that delivers such great, quality fine arts training for youngsters. My daughter Yasmin has been attending LIAFA for about 3 seasons now. She has gained so much from the experience. She loves her teacher, Ms. Chipana and the atmosphere the school offers. Art is no longer just a hobby for her but a part of her future dreams and goals. Thank you."

"The work that Suanne Martin helped my to produce was without a doubt one of the highlights of my portfolio.  These pieces helped to earn me numerous scholarships and a full ride, but the most important was the Dean's Scholarship to the Ringling College of Art and Design where I will be graduating.  Her method of teaching is great as well, with her extensive knowledge of anatomy, techniques, and materials being tempered by her very easygoing nature."

“LIAFA provides students with training in the traditional skills of the artist and helps them to build their portfolios for application to professional college art programs.”
